Focus on Research with Professor Alexandre Calvacante - Mathematical literacy and digital technology: are they reconcilable?
With contemporary transformations in technology and social dynamics, mathematics curricula around the world have been changing in various ways to make the subject more relevant to everyday life. This trend is typically reflected in new content, skills and processes that cut across multiple mathematical strands (e.g., coding, financial literacy, social emotional learning skills, problem solving, communication and representation). This trend, however, has yet to be fully integrated into technological solutions provided by educational platforms. These platforms provide powerful tools to explore mathematical concepts from a disciplinary, scholarly perspective of the subject, but struggle to make sense in non-academic mathematics classes. This presentation discusses an ongoing Mitacs-funded collaboration between OISE and Maplesoft, a Canadian technology leader in the field of mathematical simulations and software. This collaboration has been exploring how a digital online platform (Maple Learn) can support students’ explorations of mathematics from multiple entry points to mathematics (processes, content, skills, contexts). The collaboration impacts not only the educational solutions developed by the company, but also how we prepare current and future mathematics teachers to implement a new perspective as reflected in many curricula.
